Phonological Awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in spoken language, such as rhyming, segmenting, blending, and identifying syllables. SLPs can help students improve their phonological awareness skills, which are foundational for decoding words while reading.
Fluency
SLPs work on improving reading fluency by helping students read smoothly and accurately. This can involve practicing reading at an appropriate pace, using expression, and improving word recognition to reduce hesitation and promote automaticity in reading.
Comprehension
SLPs can help students develop strategies to understand and retain information from texts. This includes improving vocabulary, making inferences, identifying main ideas, and teaching strategies for summarizing and recalling key details from what they’ve read.
